Movitas was honored to participate in an action at the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma on February 24th. Folks blocked vans from leaving the center, keeping several folks from being processed for deportation that day. And folks being detained inside heard about, they launched a hunger strike which has now spread to other sites (esp. in Texas). For more, see below.
Movitas will continue to stand with Not 1 More Deportation (http://www.notonemoredeportation.com/), and other folks interested in challenging the racism and classism of our country’s current immigration policy, and the private prison industry. And calls on other like-minded folks to connect up with local efforts wherever you are.
On April 5, 2014, actions will be happening all over the US. Check for one near you.
Just a rundown from Movitas on the past year: We had a busy 2013, doing things like supporting Familias Unidas por la Justicia (local berry pickers in their struggles against unfair bosses for better wages and working conditions), marching against Monsanto, and traveling to the BAM! (Bands Agitate and Mobilize) gathering in Toronto, Ontario, where several radical street bands from the US and Canada held skillshares, workshops and collaborated on a street action in support of the Grassy Narrows First Nation in their fight for justice around past (and potential future) environmental destruction of their community. Thanks to folks who contributed to help us defray travel costs.
We’ll be at the MLK Day March on Monday, Jan 20th. Come and join us in the streets, and hope to see you in the streets more in 2014!
See you all at the Seattle May Day events! Come find us and dance along with us!
We’re gonna be playing around Capitol Hill Arts Walk on Thursday November 8, 2012. Look for us between 7 and 9pm.
We had a great time playing at the Immigrants Rights March as part of the May Day events this year. There’s an interesting article in an MSNBC blog that mentions Movitas. It’s also where this great photo comes from. Also, the stranger mentions us in their blog, but with no pic.
